2016 Training

Happy 2016 Everyone!
Attached you will find a training calendar for all of the training sessions we have available between now and the end of our fiscal year.  Please review it and choose any classes you would like to attend.  In order to register, you will need to go through your supervisor.  Doing so allows us to have an accurate idea of how much material we will need for each class, etc.   Not sure how many hours you need?  That’s a question for your supervisor as well.
Please keep in mind that the location for each session could change based on the number of people wishing to attend.  It is always a good idea to call the HR office the day before to confirm the location.
Finally, below you will find a brief course description for each class that is offered.  You will also note that some of the classes are mandatory for certain employees while others are restricted as to who can attend.
Thank you for all you do for the men, women and children we serve.  We have tried to select course material that will help all employees continue in providing excellent care.
Leah Henderson, Executive Director

Safety Matters
This session will cover a wide variety of possible work related injuries.  Material will include tips on how to perform job duties in the safest manner with a focus on keeping ourselves and our clients safe.

New Employee Orientation
This course is required for new employees within the first 30 days of employment.  The new employee will learn about the history of developmental disabilities, learn the history of Civitan Services, be introduced to the members of the Board of Directors and so much more.

First Aid / CPR
This class is mandatory for all new employees and is required to be updated bi-annually.  The employee will learn basic 1st Aid skills including how to recognize various medical emergencies and then respond appropriately in a manner that is safe for both the patient and the caregiver.   The CPR portion of the training includes learning the proper methods for administering CPR as well as an introduction and instruction on the use of an AED.

Communication, Incident Reporting & Confidentiality
This course is required for all Supportive Living Professionals.  All content will be specific to those serving in this department.  Material will include when and how to best communicate with the other members of the Waiver Department, including other staff, family members and the client.  In the Incident Reporting section, the employee will learn when an incident report is needed and what type of information they will have to provide, etc.  Confidentiality will cover what constitutes a “need to know” basis as well as other information that will help the employee know under what circumstances client and or employee information can be shared.  This class is restricted to Community Services employees as all information is department specific.

Supervisor Training
These classes are designed to help our supervisors in their role of leadership.  Topics will vary from HR related matters to Leadership.  Each session will be announced prior to the scheduled date.  Each class will be restricted based upon topic and content.

Transportation Training
This course is required by DDS and is a requirement for anyone transporting clients or operating a Civitan Services’ vehicle.  The employee will learn important safety and defensive driving tips to help keep themselves and the clients as safe as possible on the road.

Is It Abuse & Person First Language
This course will look at a variety of situations and help the employee grasp a better knowledge of what is considered abuse, maltreatment &/or neglect.  It will also cover the appropriate steps to take if you suspect that a coworker, family member or other person is acting in an abusive manner.  Person First Language will help the employee understand the best words to use when speaking to or about a person who has a developmental disability.

Positive Approach to Care
This class will focus on caring for our elderly clients who are beginning to show signs of dementia related illness.  Although specifically designed for dementia care, we have found the information relevant to the care of all clients in the aging population.  Topics will include an introduction to dementia, tips on providing safe ways to assist clients in daily activities, etc.  More accurate descriptions for each session will be available before the scheduled date.  Some classes will also be open to the public.
Introduction to DD & Mental Illness vs DD
This session is open to all employees who want to learn more about specific disabilities.  The instructor will share basic information on a variety of the most common developmental disabilities including causes, typical effects and outcomes.  The course will also cover the difference between mental illness and developmental disabilities and what it means to be “dually diagnosed”.

Annual Orientation & HIPPA
This class is required for all employees who have been with the organization for more than 6 months.  All material covered is a requirement of DDS.  This is a refresher course to the New Employee Orientation.  The HIPPA section will cover what type of information can and cannot be shared regarding the people we serve as well as ourselves and our coworkers.   It will also review ways to safeguard ourselves from accidentally sharing inappropriate information.

Ten Commandments of Communicating with People with DD
This session features a short video demonstrating inappropriate ways to interact with people who have a developmental disability.  Class discussion for each scenario will include the correct way to respond and there will be time to share other common situations that employees may find themselves facing.

Documentation & Mileage Reporting
This class is mandatory for all Supportive Living Professionals.  This is a refresher course to ensure that all documentation is being completed in a manner that meets all requirements and gives an accurate description of services being provided.  Mileage reporting will cover not only the correct way to complete the required paperwork, but also the rules that govern what is allowable and what is not under state and federal Medicaid guidelines.  This class is restricted to Community Services employees as the content is department specific.

Annual First Aid Refresher

This course is required for all employees not taking First Aid/CPR in a given year.  This will include a review of information for a variety of emergency situations including treating someone who has had a seizure, is experiencing shock, etc.  It will also cover safety measures that will ensure that both the caregiver and the patient are not placed in harm’s way.
